Artist's Comments

A river otter mother gathers material for her den. This otter was very clever and had multiple dens around the lake, as I watched her roam the small lake I counted 3 den sites. She would gather up mouthful after mouthful of grass at each den and take it inside while her pups played outside. She would often put them inside one of the dens and gather fish for her young.

It's hard to truly critique wildlife images, but i will attempt at this one. First off, this image is just fantastic, the colors, the detail, and the overall pose of the animal with the grass in its mouth is just amazing. Composition wise, i like how the otter is not dead center. You can see it in its natural habitat. The blades of grass in front of the otter i find a bit distracting but with wildlife, its very hard to have the perfect setting. I wonder if you might have been able to move to the left and see if you could reach the otter without the grass overlapping the fur coat. The image i find quite humorous as well, which is a good thing. You hardly ever see things like this unless your at the right spot at the right time, and this shows exactly that. A great wildlife photographer shooting a great and unforgettable scene. Overall, id like to have been there watching the action myself, and makes me want to get out and shoot some unique wildlife shots.

What is the point of having three den sites?

Saftey,
her pups are never far from a safe retreat should trouble come. she could also always have them close by the dens were situated far from each other on opposite ends of the lake. She would take them to the den nearest the area she wanted to fish in, hide them in the den and than go fish.

most of the time otters will only have one den but she had the whole lake to herself and there were several great spots with trees that came right up to the shore, she was simply taking advantage of the situation.

That's what your mom said, before I shaved her back! ATHF

Is there some tread left on those tires, or is it just like throwing a hot dog down the hallway? Family Guy

captions are essential to understanding a photo :-)
