A Grizzly bear pauses in the dim evening light.
Even the mightiest animals of the forest must take care with each step. This bear has a badly injured rear leg of unknown causes, and was clearly desperate for an easy meal as it dug up rocks and branches looking for insects. This image was taken from my car sunroof. NEVER approach or photograph an injured animal on foot. They are often desperate to survive and all fear for humans will often be erased in there situation. Comments
amazing, what a beautiful animal! i'm glad you stayed safe, and i hope the bear is faring better! any followups?
-- Check out my stock account for pictures of animals, plants, and exotic locations! ~meihua-stock Great composition. I really like all of the opposing angles, the log angling up to the right, the grass angeling down to the left, it helps to give the shot a more wild and untamed feel than, if say it were taken in a flat meadow. nice sharp focus, and thin depth of field brings your attention to the bears eyes nicely. As for his expression and posture, he looks curious, like he just noticed you were there, and is trying to figure you out. very non-agressive, yet not fearful either. this makes sense since he also looks like a rather young adult male, notice the narrow looking snout, tallish ears, and lack of scars or abrasions on his face. An older bear will have much more scaring, and a seemingly broader thicker snout, as well as shorter, more rounded off ears. I would put him in the 5-10 year old range.
it is worth noting that bears, and Grizzlies in particular have an amazing ability to recover from injuries, they are the subject of much research into how they heal up wounds so well, (for possible human medical insights). Unless his leg is badly broken, I would be he recovers fully. -- "we no longer camp as for a night, but have settled on earth and forgotten heaven" Thoreau this is a great capture...i was watching a show on grizzlies today and how their interactions with humans often leads to them being taken out of the wild...good thing you stayed in your car, its unfortunate for its injury, hopefully it will pull through

Critiques
The light captured in it is very interesting, as it creates a rim lighting effect around the bear which really allows it to "pop" out.
Ultimately, however, the thing that really makes the photo for me is the moment at which it was caught. The bear seems to be moving towards and staring at the camera. I feel involved. I feel like I am out, in the wild, standing before this powerful creature, coming towards me.
On a technical note, the shot seems very sharp, at this resolution, and the shallow depth of field helps isolate the subject nicely. The composition is nicely laid out as well. The bear is placed near the right third of the frame, leaving an open area in front of its line of movement, allowing one to imagine the rest of its path.
I haven't written a critique in a while, but definitely felt this shot was worth it.
